Ten Thoughtful (and Unexpected) Questions to Ask a Potential Caregiver

When interviewing a caregiver for a loved one, practical questions—about training, availability, and experience—are essential. But sometimes, it’s the more personal questions that reveal who someone truly is and how they’ll connect with your loved one day to day.

Here are ten creative questions that go a little deeper:

1️⃣ What’s a small act of kindness that made a big difference in your life? This reveals empathy and what they value in relationships—key traits in caregiving.

2️⃣ Which character from a book or movie do you identify with most, and why? This helps you understand their personality, resilience, and sense of humor—qualities that often define how a caregiver connects with others.

3️⃣ What does a “good day” look like to you when caring for someone? Their answer can show whether they focus on patient comfort, companionship, or accomplishment.

4️⃣ How do you like to start a conversation with someone new? Social connection is crucial for older adults; this question hints at their communication style and warmth.

5️⃣ What’s the most meaningful lesson you’ve learned from someone you’ve cared for? Experienced caregivers often have touching insights that show genuine respect for their clients.

6️⃣ How do you recharge after a long day of caregiving? Caregivers who know how to maintain balance tend to provide more consistent, long-term care.

7️⃣ What motivates you to work in caregiving? Passion and purpose are better indicators of commitment than experience alone.

8️⃣ How do you handle moments of frustration or stress? This question helps identify emotional maturity and coping strategies.

9️⃣ What’s something you do to make each day special for your client? Look for creativity, patience, and an understanding of small joys.

🔟 How would your past clients or their families describe you in three words? You’ll often get more authentic insight than from a formal reference.

These questions go beyond a résumé—they invite honest conversation and reveal whether a caregiver will truly connect with your loved one on a human level.
